Toon Zone Comic Book Culture Logo Archive

These are all the logos which were used in 2005 for Toon Zone's Comic Book Culture forum.

Original Logos
These were the original logos that were used when the Comic Book Culture Forum graphic revamp happened. Marc Thibodeau (a.k.a. CaptainInfinity) did the original logo, and also provided the Photoshop file and instructions on how to make new logos after he stepped down as the CBC graphics guy. Thanks, Marc!
From left to right: Daredevil, Superman, and Will Eisner's Spirit From left to right: Spider-Man, Firestorm (from the 2004 relaunch), and Anakin Skywalker
This one is the dance remix edition that was never used on the CBC, which subs in the iconic Watchmen #1 cover for Superman.

February 2005
Current Cover Logo
From left to right: Seven Soldiers #0 (DC), Black Panther #1 (Marvel), and Love is a Foreign Language Vol. 2 (Oni Press).
Unfortunately, this logo never got used, which is a shame because I liked it. The fact that this never got rotated in was one reason why I started this archive in the first place. I thought Black Panther cropped nicely to the "B." I was very happy when I finally managed to get the two people in Love is a Foreign Language to be separated by the structure of the "C."
For the record, this was the first CBC logo I ever did.
Anniversaries Logo
From left to right: the debut of the Punisher in Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974), the first Phantom comic strip on Feb 17, 1936, and the debut of Captain Marvel (Shazam!) in 1940.
One of the other TZ CBC mods pointed out that putting the Punisher and Captain Marvel on opposite sides of the logo was a great idea. I wish I did it intentionally, but the thought didn't occur to me until he pointed it out.

March 2005
Current Cover Logo
From left to right: DC Countdown #1 (DC), Ultimate Iron-Man #1 (Marvel), and G.I. Joe #40 (Devil's Due).
The general theme is screaming people and limp bodies. I would have preferred the G.I. Joe as the "B" (for "Baroness," the limp figure in Destro's arms) and Ultimate Iron Man as the "C" (for writer Orson Scott Card), but the cropping just didn't work out. Now the second "C" has to stand for "Cobra" (just visible on the Baroness' chest in the lower-right) and the "B" has to stand for...um..."Bad Day for Tony Stark."
You don't want to know how many tries it took to find a workable crop for the Destro cover.
Anniversaries Logo
From left to right: Captain America Comics #1, from March 1941; The Dark Knight Returns #1, from March 1986; and Cerebus the Aardvark, ending with Cerebus #300 in March 2004. I'm most happy with how Cerebus' snout happened to line up exactly with the bottom section of the "C."
Compared to the "Current Covers" logo, this one was a breeze, and the initials worked out perfectly.

April 2005
April Fool's Logo
From left to right: The Tick, Ambush Bug, and Forbush Man.
Hey, it's April Fool's Day, so I picked the best comic book April Fools.
Current Cover Logo
From left to right: Ultimates 2 #5 (Marvel), Invincible #0 (Image), and Adam Strange #8 (DC)
The only thing worth noting here is that the Ultimates cover also works as part of the anniversary cover this month, since Bryan Hitch is celebrating a birthday on April 22.

May 2005
Current Cover/Free Comic Book Day Logo
From left to right: Young Avengers #4 (Marvel), The Man With the Screaming Brain #1 (Dark Horse), and Batman: Dark Detective #1.
Was trying to make Bruce Campbell look like he was reacting to the Joker, but I don't think it quite worked. Also briefly altered the indicia to commemorate this year's Free Comic Book Day.
Anniversaries
From left to right: The Hulk by Mike Deodato, the cover to Detective Comics #27, and Usagi Yojimbo.
Another two-fer with the Hulk image, since big green debuted in 1962 and it's also Mike Deodato's birthday.
Usagi Yojimbo totally rules, too. You should read it.

June - July 2005
"Oh Crap It's June 10 and I Have No New Logo" Logo
Exactly what it sounds like. I liked Marvel's House of M poster image by Oliver Copiel, the comic was debuting in June, and I really needed a new logo image fast. The results were not terrific (I think it's a bit too busy), and on top of that, this logo ended up being the one for the month of July as well. I'll make up for it in August, I promise.

August 2005
I felt guilty for phoning it in for 2 months. I may have overcompensated this month.
Marvel Current Covers Logo
From left to right: Captain America #10 (Lee Weeks), Runaways #7 (Chris Bachalo), and Gravity #3 (Mike Norton)
Went for something a bit more abstract for the first "C", since zooming in on Cap's face for the Cap cover wouldn't have meant a whole lot. I think it mostly works. I'm also a bit disappointed that Gravity's nose gets chopped off by the crop, but all the other placements for the image were even worse.
DC Current Covers
From left to right: JLA Classified #11 (Michael Stribling), Catwoman #46 (Adam Hughes), and Birds of Prey #85 (Adriana Melo)
Got 2/3rds of the way through this cover (inserting WW and Catwoman), and realized that women are totally under-represented in the logos. This gave me a convenient excuse to select the Birds of Prey cover as the third image. Gotta love a woman in uniform. Through happy accident, this is also an anniversary cover, since Will Eisner debuted the Blackhawks in August of 1941, and the Black Canary made her comics debut in 1947 also.
On a side note, it was a regal pain to erase the Catwoman cover cleanly, since the black of the cover very neatly matched the black of the letter.
Indies Current Covers Logo
From left to right: Serenity #2 (Jo Chen, Dark Horse), G.I. Joe: Snake-Eyes: Declassified #1 (Emiliano Santalucia & Jeremy Roberts, Devil's Due), and Hero Camp #4 (Image, Robbi Rodriguez)
The selection of the Jo Chen/Kaylee cover for the first "C" follows the "not enough women in the logo" thought that drove the DC cover, plus I like Kaylee and Jo Chen. The Snake Eyes cover is really striking, and I hope it works as the "B." Last, we have a giant purple gorilla with antennas on his head, because we are also sorely lacking in giant purple gorillas with antennas on their heads in the logos, too.
Indies Current Covers Logo (Unused Alternate)
From left to right: Season of the Witch #0 (Kevin Sharpe & Thomson Knox, Image), rest same as previous.
This is the alternate version of the logo which got ditched because I couldn't get enough of Jessica's face into the "C" without pulling in the letters right above her head on the cover. Also would have made this a rather Image Comics-heavy logo. Pity, too, since the warrior princess blowing a bubble is a terrific image, and one that even got me to pre-order the comic book.

Anniversaries Logo
From left to right: Scrooge McDuck by Carl Barks, Bleu Finnegan from Chynna Clugston's Blue Monday, and Black Canary's cover debut in Flash Comics.
The Scrooge McDuck is a two-fer, since Carl Barks drew his first Duck story in August, 1942, and he pased away on August 25, 2000 (R.I.P., Uncle Carl). Selecting Chynna Clugston's Blue Monday and the Black Canary for the other 2 images is the urge to include more women in the logo striking yet again.
Next year, expect a Jack Kirby extravaganza, or some way to include the cover to Archie Meets the Punisher. Not sure which yet.

September 2005
Current Covers Logo
From left to right: Common Foe #3 (Esad Ribic, Image), Batman: Jekyll & Hyde #6 (Sean Phillips, DC), and Ultimates 2 #8 (Bryan Hitch, Marvel)
Bad guys get some logo love this month, with the title character of Image's Common Foe, Two-Face from DC, and the traitor in the Ultimates from Marvel. I realize this is 2 Bryan Hitch covers in one year, but what can I say? Man draws a great cover.
You'd think I'd have learned from last month that black covers don't work well when you're trying to erase things, but NOOOOOOO. I have to do it again this month.
Anniversaries Logo
From left to right: Groo the Wanderer by Sergio Aragones, Falka by Juan Zanotto, & Mazinger Z by Go Nagai
International comics people this month. I've been trying to get my hands on more of Juan Zanotto's stuff, but it's a bit hard to come by in America. Also would like to check out more of Go Nagai's work, at least on the Giant Robots Beating the Crap Out of Each Other side.

October 2005
Current Covers Logo
From left to right: She-Hulk 2 #1 (Greg Horn, Marvel), Solo #7 (Mike Allred, DC), and Transformers #0 (E.J. Su, IDW)
Point 1: In about 2 minutes, I'm just going to stop calling it "She-Hulk 2" and just call it "She-Hulk," just so people will be really confused about whether I mean the original series, the John Byrne reboot, the first Dan Slott "season," or the second Dan Slott "season."
Point 2: Why, exactly, did they feel the need to change the brilliant Batusi Solo cover? Why did they need to change it to Silver Age Wonder Girl?
Current Cover Halloween Logo
From left to right: The Goon 25-Cent Special (Eric Powell, Dark Horse), Vengeance of the Mummy (Kalman Androzofsky, Moonstone), and Marvel Monsters: Where Monsters Dwell (Eric Powell, Marvel)
Gee, that's a lot of Eric Powell, innit?
And I picked Vengeance of the Mummy because nothing says "love" like a hot dead woman wrapped up in skin-tight bandages, but the comic is surprisingly good in a real B-movie kind of way.

November 2005
DC Current Covers Logo
From left to right: All-Star Superman #1 (Frank Quitely), Green Lantern #7 (Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino), and Batman and the Monster Men #1 (Matt Wagner)
Marvel Current Cover Logo
From left to right: Thing #1 (Andrea Di Vito), Fantastic Four/Iron Man: Big in Japan #2 (Seth Fisher), and Captain Universe/Invisible Woman (Daniel Acuna)
Was going for a Fantastic Four vibe here.
DC Current Covers Logo
From left to right: Amazing Spider-Man #42 (John Romita Sr.) lets Marvel fans see Mary Jane Watson's face for the first time in November 1966, Osamu Tezuka and Astro Boy stamp (Osamu Tezuka) for Tezuka's birthday on Nov 3, 1928, and the Sandman (Mike Dringenberg, I believe) for Neil Gaiman's birthday on Nov 10, 1960.

December 2005
Current Covers Logo
From left to right: GLX-Mas Special (Paul Pelletier, Marvel), Bad Planet #1 (Lewis Larosa and Tim Bradstreet, Image), and Mr. Miracle #1 (Pasqual Ferry, DC). Only noteworthy bit is that the Mr. Miracle image is the first time I flipped a cover to get it to fit better.
